Flatirons Vista
location: Boulder OSMP
size: 24 x 48 inches
materials: Acrylic on panel
by Kristen Ross
about:The iconic rock formations known as the Flatirons line the eastern slope of Green Mountain, the third highest point in Boulder. I wanted to paint the Flatirons as seen from the East, as this was how I first glimpsed them when first arriving in Boulder. The distance and angle tell a clearer story of the movement and upheaval of this landscape, which I find fascinating.
The Flatirons, along with the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs and Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, belong to a layer of rock called the Fountain Formation. They were lifted and tilted into their present orientation between 80 and 35 million years ago during the formation of the Southern Rocky Mountains.
Please note: Colors may vary slightly from what you see on screen. Paintings will ship or be available for local pickup after the show concludes on June 20th.
